A Case of Idiopathic Hypoparathyroidism

Abstract

|
|
Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism is a true parathyroid hormone deficiency of unknown cause. Since Beumer and Falkenheim first described it in 1926, more than 150 cases have been reported. This disease has been rarely recognized and we present this case following the two cases presented by Yoon et. al. in Korea. A 34-year-old house-wife was admitted to Severance Hospital, because of intermittent tingling and numbness of the upper and lower extremities and carpopedal spasm for 4 months on May 29th, 1973. Physical examination showed positive Chvostek´s and Trousseau´s signs and laboratory data revealed hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and negative Sulkowitch test. Clinical symptoms and signs improved with supplementary calcium and calciferol therapy.
